After having to be pushed for a few weeks due to rising COVID numbers, the 2022 San Diego Tryout went off without a hitch. Once again we want to thank the San Diego Power Surge organization for their help every year. The Power Surge is one of the best travel ball organizations on the West Coast. Great people ant they continue to produce outstanding players.

As for the tryout, it was a good mix of grad years with some talented “older” players and a number of younger athletes as well. Two 2023 athletes who really stood out were 3B/C Ellie Zerr and OF/UT Angel Riggins. Ellie is very solid defensively and should be a solid recruit for many college programs. Angel should catch the eye of many schools this summer. She has a chance to be a true 5 tool player as her game matures in the years to come.

2024 Middle Infielders Macie Lawrence and Julianne Marie Torres were also impressive. Macie is a smooth defender at SS who can definitely play at the D1 level. Julianne Marie is a solid lefty hitter who can also hold her own defensively. \

The younger groups made up a large portion of the tryout, and several of them were outstanding. With continued work and dedication to developing their skill sets and improving their athleticism, many of them show real promise as college prospects. Rian Hickman, Mirella Barron, and Karsyn Norton all displayed a sophistication beyond their years. We look forward to seeing how they progress in the next year or so.

We want to share a quick story about Karsyn. She came to an ODM® testing a year ago and put up numbers that were just okay. She wasn’t satisfied with those results and proceeded to begin serious training with a facility in Arizona. And the work has paid off. She ran a legit 4.785 Shuttle. For context, P5 shortstops run it 4.85 or better on average. So right now we can say Karsyn has the lateral quickness and explosion needed to play middle infield at the highest levels of the game. Few young players can lay claim to such a statement. But it is a testament to the power of focused work. We can also tell you, beyond that shuttle time, Karsyn covers her position smoothly; displaying great and effortless range both to her left and right, with solid glove skills.

Thanks again to the Power Surge organization led by Scott Berndes for all their assistance with our San Diego Tryout.

We want to thank all the players and parents who joined us for this tryout, it was a lot of fun. Please keep us updated on your tournament and game schedules and email them to info@ondecksoftball.net

Please remember that the ODM numbers, while growing increasingly important, are only a snapshot of a player’s evaluation and potential. They are also just a portion of the Tryout selection process, for more information read Your Tryout & ODM Numbers. Use these numbers as a tool and work at developing your athleticism, but constantly work on improving and refining your softball skill set – both offensively and defensively.

These numbers have also been posted to your profile. An Allister Index is not given with Tryout ODM numbers.
