This year held the first Midwest Elite Camp at The Dome in Rosemont. This has long been a dream of ours and is intended to complement the highly successful and long running West Coast Elite Camp that has been held for the last 13 years. Bill Conroy (Beverly Bandits) and Gerry Quinn (Illinois Chill) offered us this great opportunity, and we jumped on it immediately.

The Midwest Elite Camp brought some of the finest players in the Midwest and a large contingent of college coaches, including coaches from the Big 10, Big 12, ACC, and the Pac 12. The day was simply great, and it was exciting to be indoors without a single weather worry.

A great number of players were outstanding and there were far too many to mention them all. The 2019 and 2020 classes played very, very well. Peyton Bannon, Payton Cox, Emma Hurley, Tori O’Brien, and Skye Grant all were eye-catching at times. Bannon was spectacular defensively at SS and has a lightning quick release. Cox, Hurley, O’Brien, and Grant were all exceptional offensively. Grant complemented that with very nice play at 3B. All players have a real chance to play at the highest level.

The 2021s were exceptional as a group. Britney Lewinski, Grace Nieto, Maggie Etzler, and Sydney Carter all had high level moments . . . over and over and over again! Nieto is just a very good offensively. Lewinski is one of the better pitchers in her class in the Midwest and possesses a nice array of pitches with excellent location. Etzler is a surprise each and every time we watch her. . she can just play the game. Many will underestimate her simply due to her size, but most Midwest schools should be looking at this versatile young player. And Carter is a tough, resilient player who can swing it, throw it, pitch it, and well everything else in between. Every school in the country should give her a good long look. One last player in this class that has to be mentioned is Savannah Fitzpatrick. She is a good player, who is tough and dynamic, but can really control the bases as a catcher. Rarely do we see players with real pop times running under 1.85. With times sub 1.75, this alone makes her a great prospect behind the plate.

We would like to thank everyone who made this camp so special. Without Bill Conroy and Gerry Quinn’s support, we could never do the things we do in the Midwest. We would like to publically thank them.

One power 5 head coach the end of the event said, “I hope you will have this every year from now on, Derek. This is a perfect event for this weekend. And we look forward to holding this camp each and every year.

Please remember that the ODM numbers, while growing increasingly important, are only a snapshot of a player’s evaluation and potential. Use these numbers as a tool and work at developing your athleticism, but constantly work on improving and refining your softball skill set – both offensively and defensively.
