For the first time, OnDeck Softball decided to hold a camp exclusively for the older crowd . . . players in their Junior and Senior years. After the last several years of watching many gifted players fall thru the proverbial recruiting cracks, we decided it was time to run a camp that featured players who have somehow been overlooked or had circumstances derail an earlier commitment. This unique event turned out to be one of the most gratifying events we have put together in recent memory.

Fifty-three players attended this first year event, and without question there were performances worthy of a shout-out. Several coaches expressed real interest in a number of the players, and one Junior College coach offered a 2019 Middle Infielder a scholarship and a roster spot for next year just before the camp finished up.  We are anxious to spread the word about these players to the entire softball coaching community because there is no doubt that a number of them can play at most 4 year schools. While there were too many good performances to detail here, I do want to mention several of note.

2019 OF Tiana Mower from the AZ Hotshot organization recently decommitted. She electrified everyone in attendance with her speed and quickness. Tiana is without question one of the fastest softball players in the nation. Her 10 yard time of 1.395 ranks as the second fastest time ever recorded by ODM®. She can fly, but that’s not all. She is also very good offensively and defensively. A solid outfielder with a big arm who can play at most schools in the country.  2019 1B/OF Jayden Cunningham from the SoCal Breakers was also very, very good. An athlete that can flat out swing the bat. Her compact swing with a good hand and bat path is capable of hitting elite pitching at any level. Jayden is going to be a very good player for her future school. 2019 OF Katelyn Alvarez from the Explosion, has really good bat control and is an ideal #2 hole hitter. She is multi-dimensional; can slap, bunt, or swing away and has the speed to do that at the next level.

2020 UT/Hitter Hailie Benko will no doubt see her recruiting fortunes rise in the next 9 months. Hailie, who plays for the Ohana Tigers, can simply hit. She is strong and athletic. And hitters find their school sooner or later. Real hitters rarely go over-looked for long. Many D-1 schools would be well advised to get involved in her recruiting. 2020 3B/C Lauren Nett from the California EC Bullets was a great surprise. A gritty competitor who is superb defensivel. She is a very good athlete and her offense is coming fast. Lauren has a chance to have many recruiting options in the next year if she just keeps working on her game. And finally 2020 OF/P Alyssa Orr from Central California’s Firecracker organization is one of the better athletes in CA. With a 94.74 Allister Index, that ranks her as a solid athlete for many schools. And as her skill set catches up with her athleticism, Alyssa will certainly find her school.

We are excited to share all the players who participated in the camp with the entire college coaching community. The coaches report will go out this week, and we will be anxious to see what develops for all of them in the year ahead. We believe the 2019s will close finalize their recruitment, and the 2020s will each have several options from which to choose. If that happens, this Sunday in Henderson, NV will for sure be one of the best days we could imagine and a great memory in OnDeck Softball history.

Please remember that the ODM numbers, while growing increasingly important, are only a snapshot of a player’s evaluation and potential. Use these numbers as a tool and work at developing your athleticism, but constantly work on improving and refining your softball skill set – both offensively and defensively. These numbers are also posted to the player profiles.
