The day before the tryout NorCal had the 2nd rainiest day since 1849! But we had two sessions to get in, so the question was – what should we do?  Get to work was the obvious answer, so Mike, Mo, Joann, and I were at the field early Saturday morning. The field was basically underwater. But Mike had a plan. 7 hours later the playing surface was perfect, the skies were blue, and we were ready to go. It turned out to be a great two days.

Both sessions were sold out, and an extraordinarily large number of players will ultimately be moved on from this tryout. Saturday seemed to feature a number of very capable hitters that spanned all the different graduating classes. Sunday’s group of infielders was solid and the first group excelled with the double play drill, it was truly something to watch.

Rather than single out the notable performances, I would really like to highlight the story of one player who will be invited to the jamborees in June for the first time. I got the story from a mother whom I recognized. After the Sunday tryout, Nicole reintroduced herself to me, and I asked which one was her daughter. Despite still being young, Morgan has grown and her game has really started to mature. Her mom reminded me that Morgan, as a 5th grader, had come to a youth camp. She has since attended two other tryouts and participated in the NorCal Jamboree each of the past two years. Nicole, her mom, said they just kept working on the fundamentals and staying with the process. Well, I can say that all that hard work is paying off. Morgan has a chance to be a high level recruit. While the new recruiting rules could change the recruiting process for her, I am confident her phone will be ringing off the hook on September 1st of her junior year. Morgan is proof that if young players keep believing, working hard, and remain faithful to the process then the rest will work it's self out.

As with all our Tryouts, we want to remind both parents and players that the recruiting process is a journey that unfolds differently for every player. Be patient and let the process work and a good decision will ultimately be made. If you weren't selected, don't be discouraged, we would like to see how you progress and improve.
