For the first time, OnDeck Softball held a Jamboree in the great state of Florida, and I can tell you we had a great time. Held in conjunction with the Alex Wilcox Classic at the Boombah Sports Park, a tournament and venue we look forward to partnering with for the future Florida Jamborees. A special thank you goes out to Legacy Events and Will Tomasello.
Thrity-five players attended this inaugural Florida Jamboree representing some of the best programs in the South – the Florida Impact, the Georgia Impact, the Tampa Mustangs, the Gold Coast Hurricanes, the Fury, the Virginia Glory, the Florida Firecrackers, the Florida Premier, the Lady Gators, the V2Pro Vipers, and the Fury. Players from two northern clubs, the NJ Pride and the IL Sparks also made the trek South. Certainly we appreciate the efforts the players and families to make this a special day.
While the players all showed well, we do need to mention some special performances. We all were amazed 2020 C/1B Kelly Swank was still looking for a school. That got all of us fired up, tho, because we are anxious to spread the word amongst the college coaches about this strong, athletic player. Kelly has a sweet swing, a solid defensive skill set behind the plate and at 1B. It will be fun to watch her progress thru the recruiting process over leading up to signing day. 2021 SS Brooke Barnard showed off a smooth and accomplished defensive skill set. 2021 C/3B Kayla Alexandre showcased solid defensive play, and outstanding hitting mechanics. We expect both Brooke and Kayla to have a number of options come September 1st. 2022 P/1B Kaylee Barrett had good location with an array of pitches she can throw down in the zone and a solid change-up. Finally the young players in the 2023 and 2024 classes showed very well and will obviously be strong classes in Florida. Needless to say, we will be anxious to follow their progress in the years to come.
We also have to thank TJ Goelz, Billy Watson, Roberto Rodriguez, and Greg Feldman for all their help. We have already begun the process of identifying players for next year’s event. And we will look forward to being out in Sanford again next year.
Please remember that the ODM numbers, while growing increasingly important, are only a snapshot of a player’s evaluation and potential. Use these numbers as a tool and work at developing your athleticism, but constantly work on improving and refining your softball skill set – both offensively and defensively.
