What a weekend it turned out to be for 208 really good uncommitted players in Southern California. A crazy thunderstorm moved in the night before forcing the cancellation of a lot of games across the area. The weather forecast for the weekend was not promising. On Saturday morning, PGF was forced to cancel tournaments in Huntington Beach and Irvine. Later that day, Triple Crown was forced to cancel their weekend at all venues except Rosetta Canyon Park. And fortunately for all of us working and playing at Rosetta, we got glimpses of sunshine, brief patches of blue sky, many clouds, a bit of mist, and a whole lot of softball.
The Rosetta Canyon staff did a remarkable job getting the fields ready for our newest recruiting concept – the Organization Testing and Evaluation (OTE). After a day of evaluation, the invited teams played a TCS bracket tournament that resulted in a champion and runner-up. The trophy will belong to the winners for the whole year and they will bring it back October 2019 to defend their championship. ODM® was on hand to test all the players and presented the top performers with medals. All in all it was a great two days of softball.
Jeff Blanco’s Monarchs took home the trophy with a stellar performance beating Brant Beddow’s SoCal Breakers. 2020 Taylor Caudill pitched very well. Sophia Masut (2021 SS) made several great plays throughout the day. And Jaden Hill (2020 UT) showed why she is one of SoCal’s most elite prospects. The Breakers were led by a slew of outstanding players – 2020 C/3B Madison Helms, 2019 P Nikki Mullin, 2019, OF/1B Jayden Cunningham, and 2021 OF Jenna Mello. Both teams ran the gauntlet to get to the final with the Monarchs conquering the SoCal Choppers, Firecrackers Arizona, Batbusters Gomes, and the Breakers. Beddow’s Breakers excellent run to the final started with wins over Athletics Mercado, Firecrackers Brashear, and Firecrackers Rico. Other teams rounding out the OTE included the Washington Ladyhawks, the Corona Angels, and the OC Batbusters Stith.
Please remember that the ODM numbers, while growing increasingly important, are only a snapshot of a player’s evaluation and potential. Use these numbers as a tool and work at developing your athleticism, but constantly work on improving and refining your softball skill set – both offensively and defensively.
