We made our annual trek to Hickman Fields for the 2025 San Diego Tryout. We were looking forward to seeing the renovations that have taken place in the last year at Hickman, home to San Diego’s Power Surge organization. Under the direction of Scott Berndes, a softball veteran of many years, the Power Surge are one of Southern California’s premier programs. Scott also oversees activities at Hickman Fields, and he is directly responsible for securing the funding for this complex. Let me say, the place did not disappoint. The paved parking, curbs, flower beds, and fencing have transformed the place. It is one of San Diego’s oldest youth sports complexes, and it now looks better than ever. Kudos to Scott and the Power Surge people for all they have done and do for San Diego softball.

We had a great tryout on this day. A full house was in attendance, and the level of play was solid. We want to thank those who gave of their time and helped us out. Zaliyah Jones and Lexie Mujica, two of Power Surge’s best players in the 2027 class, and it was great to have them there. Kristen Lucas, one of San Diego’s best instructors, came out to throw front toss and hit fungo. And of course, we can’t forget Scott. Without Scott Berndes and his group, we never could do what we do each and every year. They all are an integral part of the OnDeck tryout system.

It is important to remember that in all tryouts we are looking for skill sets and athleticism. We do it this way to make sure an athlete can hold her own in the Jamboree or National Camp setting. If the skill sets of the player can hold up under the rigor of an OnDeck workout, and the prospect is athletic enough to match the athleticism of the other players, then we are good to go. It is our feeling that attending coaches will find that athlete intriguing enough to follow and evaluate on their own.

We want to thank all the players and parents who joined us for this tryout. Please keep us updated on your tournament and game schedules and email them to info@ondecksoftball.net

Listed below are the players selected and the invitations they are guaranteed. It is important to know that players were considered for all Jamborees. If you were not selected, keep working on your skill set and athleticism. Do not be discouraged. We want to do what is best for you and help you be successful on the softball field.

Please remember that the ODM numbers, while growing increasingly important, are only a snapshot of a player’s evaluation and potential. They are also just a portion of the Tryout selection process, for more information read Your Tryout & ODM Numbers. Use these numbers as a tool and work at developing your athleticism, but constantly work on improving and refining your softball skill set – both offensively and defensively.

These numbers have also been posted to your profile. An Allister Index is not given with Tryout ODM numbers. If you have questions about ODM numbers email KJ at kj@odmtesting.com
