We had a great time in Salt Lake City with our third annual Utah Tryout. All this came about because a group of very dedicated Utah families made the trek to SoCal one year for a tryout. After a discussion with the group, we decided that rather than them coming to us, we would go to them. And the Utah Tryout was created.
We have had a good group of Utah players successfully navigate their way thru the system. So it is always exciting to get to Salt Lake City and see who is next on the horizon.
This year we had a very young group who will be very good if they continue to work, and particularly work on their defensive skill set. It’s easy to see that many players here are spending time in the cage working on hitting. And that is understandable given the colder weather. However, throwing mechanics and glove skills aren’t quite as polished as their hitting. You have to play both aspects of the game!
We had several very good performances that we would like to mention here. 2024 OF/SS Hayleigh Oliver was very good both offensively and defensively. She has solid swing mechanics combined with speed and athleticism. Three 2025s also were very impressive. 1B/OF Arianna Fjeldsted, C/3B Lafiana Fifita, and MI Jazmine Prathan all did a very nice job in all phases of the tryout – hitting, defense, and ODM®.
We want to thank several people whose help was key in getting this Utah tryout off the ground. Tanya Smith from Utah Fastpitch Club has been a friend of ours for years, and we appreciate her immensely. Also, the Salt Lake Community College softball program allows us to use their facility, and we are very thankful to them. Head Coach Cyndee Bennett and Assistant Coach Tara Bendt great. Their program is nationally recognized as one of the most competitive junior college programs in the country. And finally we’d like to thank SLCC players Bailey Frischknecht, Josee Haycock, and Kaylee Pierce for their outstanding day of work!

Please remember that the ODM numbers, while growing increasingly important, are only a snapshot of a player’s evaluation and potential. They are also just a portion of the Tryout selection process, for more information read Your Tryout & ODM Numbers. Use these numbers as a tool and work at developing your athleticism, but constantly work on improving and refining your softball skill set – both offensively and defensively.
These numbers have also been posted to your profile. An Allister Index is not given with Tryout ODM numbers.
Evaluations were available for purchase for two weeks after the tryout. If you are interested in purchasing an evaluation ($30/player), email info@ondecksoftball.net.
