As everyone knows, California has been blasted by rain and wind over the last week or so. With a little luck, the amazing work put in by Power Surge’s Dan Worley, and the boundless optimism and enthusiasm of Power Surge’s Scott Berndes, we pulled off a solid tryout and had a great day.

Special mention must be made about the efforts of Sofia Mujica and Alex Riggs. These two future college stars have been with us for years now, and they know what to do and when to do it without a word being spoken. And wow does that help. Sofia (UCLA) and Alex (USD) will most assuredly be stellar additions to those two programs next Fall. We love those two!

Let’s get to the tryout. We had an exceptional group as a whole, but want to mention a few special performances. 2025 Catcher Isabella Hiner has superb pop times and a solid offensive game. Five 2026 middle infielders and one outfielder really stood out. Lainey Llamas, Isabella Harris, and Violet Espin all are exceptional athletes with high level skill sets that project them to be solid D1 prospects. Liana Quiñones is also a very skilled player, but what stands out about Liana is her bat. Outfielder Amanda Wise was one of the fastest players in the tryout. She has good outfields and is a very promising hitter.

2027 middle infielder Peyton Stokes is impressive both offensively and defensively. She has really good hands. Can swing the bat. And makes good, consistent contact.

And finally we have to mention three players from the 2029 class who were exceptional. Haley Schmitt and Alivia Ramon flew in from Houston, and boy are we glad they did. Both showed amazing potential. Haley is smooth and accomplished. She just needs to keep working and refining her game. Alivia is a powerful hitter and defender. And she is a superb pitching prospect, with velocity already consistently in the low 60s. Lefty P/1B Remi Spangler, from San Diego, oozes with natural talent. She has to keep working and developing, but she is talented. And the bottom line is Remi SMOKED the ball. She can it deep and did so often.

This will be OnDeck’s 24th year of scouting for college coaches, and it is our 20th year of running the recruiting events. The San Diego Tryout was a great day and a wonderful way to begin our 2024 campaign.
